Antique Italian painting from 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting a mythological subject of exceptional pictorial quality, attributable to the circle of Camillo Procaccini (1551 - 1629). With raw realism the painter tells the story that we know through Ovid's Metamorphoses. Athena had thrown her flute away, cursing anyone who had found it. A satyr picked it up, Marsyas, who, having become very skilled at playing it, one day challenged Apollo , the god of music. The Muses, called to judge the race, were impressed by the mastery of the satyr. As a punishment for challenging a God, Apollo condemned Marsyas to be tied to a tree and skinned alive. To symbolize music, the painter puts at the feet of the two contenders an instrument of his age. Painting of great intensity and impact, for antique dealers and collectors, in excellent state of conservation, already cleaned. Spectacular wooden frame, carved and gilded, from 18th century. Sight size H 90 x W 70 cm.
